KOKOMA
REPERTOIRE

"Kokoma" interprets the traditional dances of old legends, ceremonies and folklore. Through this dynamic dance, the audience are entertained and educated about the richness of African culture. These movements vary from slow, sensual and hypnotic to very intense high energy. This will move the audience to get on their feet and clapping their hands.

Various Kokoma Dances:

Ekombi
An ancestral dance of the Efik people where the movements are derived from the motions of the ocean and sea creatures.

Abinsi
This special dance celebrates love and marriage. During this celebration, the men get to choose their bride.

Uyai
A maiden dance from the Ibibio people of Akwaibom State of Nigeria .

Alofe
Thanksgiving dance from Ogun State of Nigeria dance performed at the end of the Harvest season.

Orishas
A ceremonial dance tribute to the Yoruba deities.

Akpasa
Fishermen dance from Cross River State to celebrate the Harvest season and coronation of the African King.

Costumes
Our costumes and attire represents the different ethnic groups and cultural traditions of the southeastern people of Nigeria . These are especially design for specific dance performances. The authentic African style garments are very elaborate with amazing color combinations. We also have the very traditional raffia costumes and headdress (ibout abang) that represents our ancestors and their story.

Music & Instrument
"Kokoma" music, inspired by ancient rhythms and sacred chants, has been passed down from one generation to another generation. It is associated with healing and helps uplift the audience. The songs about morality, human character, pride and the African community is sung. Instruments like Ekomo (kongas), Obodom (tree trunk), Nkong (bells), Nsak (shekere) and the talking drum are primarily used.
