African cultural Workshops for Residencies and Assemblies for Elementary & Secondary Schools

African Cultural tradition have been passed down through Generations to guide in unity, self discipline, respect, a sense of direction and to also bring out inner strength and identity for all life purpose
I bring Africa into the classroom by using art and traditional items that express the cultural legacies of West African people with emphasis on the Efik, Ibibios and other Nigerian tribes. The workshop begins with an overview of African Geographic History with lecture on spirituality, social traditions, common greetings and vocabulary. They will be able to identify similarities and differences between West African and Canadian society.
The session also involves voice expressions, learning tribal chants, 'play songs' and clapping rhythms, which are vital in the growing up in the African culture, students will learn the history and culture of African dance. They will be taught dance variations and techniques with specific meanings and symbolism of each dance expression and its effects in daily life activities.
SELF-EXPRESSION DANCE- For Intermediate and Secondary students and Youth Organization
In this Workshop the students are given the opportunity to express themselves on an individual level and challenge their mind through the art of African Dance
by listening to the drums and feeling the connection between the drum and themselves. They will be guided on how to let their body movements follow the 'drum talk' as they create their own form of communication between themselves and the drummer. Students will also learn the importance of co-ordination and balance through exciting dance moves that are easy to follow with a little high energy.
RYTHM WORKSHOP
Drumming is an effective way to bring people both young and old together. it is a fun and easy way to inspire creativity and reduce stress. you do not have to be musical have any previous, skills every person can play a part in a rythm while enjoying laughter leisure and harmony together. It encourages people to listen,improvies and helps to reassure their abilities and musical talent.
My workshop is all about allowing yourself to experience while having fun.
I begin with an introduction and demonstration of African musical instruments, followed by lessons on:
1) Simple Break patterns
2) Call and respond exercise
3) Drumming Techniques
4) Individual expression
5) Timing and speed
6) Exploration of different sounds and other instrument: shekeres and bells
At the end of my workshop students are always encourage and given chance to be creative and put into action the cultural experience,morals and values of African dance and drumming that have been thought to them in front of an audience.
The entire school and parents are encouraged to attend the performance.
Please note:
The school must provide materials, props or costumes accessories if they wish to have a formal performance.
I encourages co-operation, collaboration and active participation from teachers and students. I engages students of all ages grades,background and abilities
