CHILDREN
RESIDENCY PROGRAM
Residencies, Workshops & Assemblies
for Elementary & Secondary Schools
presented by Maobong Oku
| Week1 |
| We bring Africa into the classroom by using art and traditional items that express the cultural legacies of both the Efik and Nigerian people. The students will learn common greetings, vocabulary and the social traditions of the Efiks and the Nigerians. They will be able to identify similarities and differences between the Nigerian and Canadian society. |
| Week 2 |
| This session will involve voice expressions, learning tribal chants, 'play songs' and clapping rhythms, which are the vital in the growing up in the African culture. |
| Week 3, 4 & 5 |
The students will learn the history and culture of African dance. They will be taught dance variations and how each dance expression has specific meaning symbolizing the daily life activities. The students will also learn the importance of how a dancer listens to the drums to fully internalize the 'drum talk'.
Self Expression - for Intermediate and Secondary students
This gives the students an opportunity to express themselves on an individual level. By listening to the drums and feeling the connection between the drum and themselves. They will be asked to let their movements follow the 'drum talk' as they create their own form of communication between themselves and the drummer. This exercise will give the students an opportunity to put into action the cultural morals and values of African dance that will have been covered in Week 1 & 2. |
| Week 6 |
| In this final week, the students will be performing the songs and dances they have learned from the previous weekly sessions. The entire school and parents are encouraged to attend the performance. |
Please note:
The school must provide materials, props or costumes accessories if they wish to have a formal performance.
This program provides and encourages co-operation, collaboration and active participation from teachers and students. It engages students of all ages and grades. |
